In recent weeks, the boys in 3.1 have presented and voted on positions in our own Student Council elections as part of our commitment to promoting active citizenship. Over the last fortnight attention has quickly turned to exploring the current national Presidential Election.
The boys watched the RTÉ News2Day interviews with Presidential candidates, Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys, as well as the opening addresses on Prime Time with Miriam O’Callaghan and Sarah McInerney. They learned about each Presidential candidate before casting their own votes for their preferred choice in our class vote.
They then integrated this with their Maths topic of Data. The boys conducted a school-wide poll from First Form up to Sixth Form. They worked in pairs to tally and reported the results back in our classroom. Once all of the class results were accurately collated in tables they then created graphs to display the vote results and share the voting outcomes with staff and students alike. Catherine Connolly emerged as the victorious candidate with a 36% share of the vote, Jim Gavin received 32% of the vote and Heather Humphreys received 15% while 17% of the students chose not to vote for any of the candidates,
The boys are eagerly awaiting the official election results this weekend, and we join them in wishing all candidates the very best of luck!
