During Science Week, the boys from many classes were delighted to welcome Mr. Robbie O'Flynn into the Junior School to speak to us about the St. Michael's Bee Hives and the honey which they produce. Mr. O'Flynn has been heavily involved in the setting up and management of the St. Michael's Bee colony and the successful harnessing of it to produce high quality and award winning natural honey. His knowledge and expertise made what could be a very complex subject extremely interesting for the boys and you could hear a pin drop throughout his talk. During the talk Mr. O'Flynn explained about how bees interact and communicate and he outlined some of theri behaviours. We learned that the St. Michael's bees could be found as far away as 5 km from their hive in St. Michael's and that we have over 0.5 million bees in situ during peak season. Mr. O'Flynn also showed us the protective equipment which he and all the bee keepers wear when inspecting the nucs in the hive and the method which they use to make the bees more docile to reduce the chance of the bees stinging them. The excitement levels peaked when Mr. O'Flynn announced that he had kindly brought some samples of the St. Michael's honey for all of the boys to taste and enjoy. Thank you so much to Mr. O'Flynn and Ms. Lambert for organising the talk for all the classes.
