During Science Week, the boys in Third Form 2 read about the lives of remarkable scientists like Marie Curie and Thomas Edison. They found particular inspiration in Alan Turing, especially his early concepts of a thinking computer, which laid the foundation for artificial intelligence.
They decided to investigate Alan Turing's life further. We were pleased to learn that he had a passion for mathematics, chess and science as a child- interests that resonate with many Third-Form boys. We also discovered his vital contributions during World War 2 when he developed a machine called "the bombe", instrumental in deciphering the Enigma code.
A highlight of this lesson was that each boy became a teacher. Each student researched different aspects of Turing's life individually before reconvening in small groups to share their findings. They compiled reports on Alan Turing in their copies and noted their favourite facts.
